Brad refused to go back to town. “You ladies go handle Billy's problem,” he said taking a sip of coffee. “I'll keep watch here.”

Rita glanced at Beth and Noel. Noel had her left wrist handcuffed to Beth's right wrist. “Brad, we also need to get these two behind bars and run Rusty's blood to the hospital for testing. And what about looking up Ollie and Patty in the database? We don't have time to—”

“I'm not leaving Rusty,” Brad said in a voice that told Rita she was fighting a losing battle. “You ladies stick those two in a jail cell, run Rusty's blood to the hospital, and then go check on Billy. The rest can wait. I'm staying right here with Rusty and that's final.”

Mae poured herself a cup of coffee. “I've contacted the hospital,” she explained with a sigh. “Dr. Downing has been notified and is waiting for the blood I drew from Rusty. We don't have time to stand here and bicker with one another.”

“Brad, we still don't know who killed Lynn Hogan,” Rhonda pointed out. “What if the killer is still stalking these halls?”

“I'm sure Rusty killed Lynn,” Mae told Rhonda in a miserable voice. She threw an angry glare at Noel. “Now that we know the truth...what other explanation is there?”

Rita watched Mae sip at her coffee. The poor woman looked miserable and in no mood to be argued with. “Mae, according to those two someone is blackmailing Kathy Stein. The killer could be the blackmailer...or Kathy Stein herself. It's not safe—”

“I'm no greenhorn,” Brad told Rita in a stern voice. “I've taken down my share of killers. If the killer shows up I'll handle him...or her. You ladies just do as I tell you. I'm still the sheriff in this town.”

“But—” Rhonda tried to object.

“Go,” Brad ordered and pointed at the kitchen door. “I don't have time to argue. And...” Brad lowered his eyes, “I'm inclined to agree with Mae...Rusty probably killed her, believing she was one of those mean people he keeps claiming are trying to hurt him.” Brad sighed. “At least no jury will condemn him for acting out of defense, and...I guess Rusty will spend the rest of his days here.”

“Then why haven't you contacted backup or forensics, Brad?” Rhonda asked. “If you really believe Rusty killed Lynn, why are you still hiding her body in that freezer?”

Brad raised his eyes. “A good cop never puts all of his apples in one barrel,” Brad answered. “Until I know for certain I'm not making a single call to the suits. Now,” he said and pointed at the kitchen doorway again, “get moving.”

“Come on, Rhonda,” Rita said, “there's no sense in standing here wasting time. The sooner we get to town and get back the better.”

Rhonda took out her gun. “Move,” she told Beth and Noel.

“Here,” Brad said and tossed Rita the keys to his patrol car. “Don't speed. Take the curves slow and watch out for deep cuts in the road going down.”

Rita caught the car keys.
